Chex Quest is a total conversion of The Ultimate Doom made by Digital Café. It was released in specially marked boxes of Chex cereal in 1996, becoming the first game to be included in a cereal box. When it was released, it increased sales by over 200%. It then went on to win both the Golden Reggie Award for Promotional Achievement, and the Silver EFFIE Award for Advertising Effectiveness.
In 1997, Digital Café released a sequel entitled Chex Quest 2, available for free at www.chexquest.com. A year later, some fans of the series put together Chex Quest 3, which mainly contained graphics and levels stolen from other Doom mods, but eventually an official Chex Quest 3 was released.
Since its release, Chex Quest has gained a cult following, with some active modders taking the game in new directions. (See Chex Quest PWAD)
Storyline[]
Chex Quest begins with an emergency meeting of the members of the Intergalactic Federation of Cereals. In it, it is brought to everyone's attention that a volcano exploded on the surface of Bazoik, a peaceful mining planet renowned for its quality nutritional products. The Chex Squadron captured fragments from the explosion, and discovered that they contained strange, slimy larvae of a creature from another dimension. When exposed to nutritional substances, these larvae abruptly grow into huge, slimy creatures with the capacity to launch slime, which they use as a weapon, in various ways from their bodies. Even more disturbing, communications with Bazoik have been interrupted, and the Federation cannot contact anyone.
Luckily, the scientists from the Federation have found a way to counter the threat. Although regular weapons do not affect the slimy invaders, the scientists have modified the "Zorchers" the main weapon of the federation, to effect a transportation of any object into another dimension.
With this new weapon, the Federation believes that it can subdue the threat, but they need a volunteer. Luckily, Chex Warrior of the Chex Squadron is here to help! Using the new weapon, he is set to face the invaders. Will he succeed? You must play to find out!
